Fight Card
FIGHT NIGHT at Yankee Stadium
1969-03-24
WBO - George Chuvalo v Muhammad Ali
NABF - Buster Mathis v Bobby Halpern
Ken Norton v Bjarne Lingaas
Ken Norton 16-0-0(15) v Bjarne Lingaas 20-4-0 (5)
Ken cruised and gave Bjarne a severe beating but couldn't knock him out in an impressive perfomace against a pretty tough scrap. Scores were:
99-91, 100-90, 100-91 as Ken moves to 17-0-0 (15) while Bjarne moves to 20-5-0 (5)
Buster Mathis 25-1-0 (6) v Bobby Halpern 32-8-2 (23)
Buster is a big perfomance and a win here could make him the #1 WBC challenger and secure him a fight against Smokin' Joe. Bobby looks kind of out of shape while Buster is super fit.
Buster dominated Bobby who already got tired in the 3rd, and the 4th was an easy pounding. In the 5th Buster landed bombs over a full round until the ref finally stopped the complete mismatch.
Buster Mathis TKO 5 Bobby Halpern as he defends the Nabf title.
Buster moves to 26-1-0 (7) and Bobby moves to 32-9-2 (23)
A good perfomance but against an opponent so out of shape, how much does it really prove?
George Chuvalo 34-7-0 (26) v Muhammad Ali 36-1-0 (31) for the WBO title.
I had alot written here but some comp- issue removed it. In short:
Ali completely dominated Chuvalo, sent him down for a knockdown in the 8th. Chuvalo continues to walk through massive punishment without going down for good. In the 15th, Ali sends him down once again, but Chuvalo stands up ready for more. The fights goes to the decision.
The scores are: 150-133, 149-134, 148-135 all in favor of the NEW WBO CHAMP, MUHAMMAD ALI.
Ali moves to 37-1-0 and moves closer to a possible third fight against Frazier. Chuvalo moves to 34-8-0 (26) and with the beating he took here tonight he might be lacking towards the end.
