Buster Mathis 27-3-0 (7) v Larry Middleton 27-1-0 (8), 10 round WBO eliminator
We are in Buster Mathis' hometown of Grand Rapids for this eliminator to decide who Muhammad Ali will have to face before November in order to keep his WBO belt.
This is expected to be a close fight, with to good boxers without particular power. Two fighters with a very similar style, as they both defend and counter with combinations. Buster Mathis is the small favourite though as he has some better wins than Larry. Geroge Chuvalo, Henry Clark and Leotis Martin are impressive opponents. His losses has come against Leotis Martin twice and Joe Frazier. Larry has beat fighters such as Roy Williams, Doug Jones, George 'Scrap Iron' Johnson and Dave Zyglewicz. His loss has come against Manuel Ramos, a loss he has revenged twice with victories.
Both show up in top shape.
1st: Mathis only needs a minute to open a cut above Middletons right eye as he clearly wins the round. 14-1
2nd: Larry is the agressor and both lands and misses more to win the round. 5-14
3rd: A close 3rd where Larry presses the action but Mathis lands more. 6-5
4th: A very actionfilled round that Larry Middleton gets the better of. 11-19
5th: Buster wins a close slow round. 6-4
6th: A nice round of action but Larry just seems to win the round by being the more active fighter. 8-12
7th: Middleton is winning the round, but Buster reopens his cut. Larry still wins the round clearly though. 5-12
8th: The round is too close to call, but Larrys cut is worsening. 10-10
With two rounds to go i have it: 77-76 for Larry Middleton
9th: Buster Mathis lands a few good shots, and the ref steps in as he looks at the cut above Larry Middletons right eye. He then talks a bit with the ringside doctor and Larrys corner and the ref waves his arms and stops the fight.
Buster Mathis TKO 9 cuts Larry Middleton.
Buster becomes mandatory WBO challenger as he moves to 28-3-0 (8) while Larry Middleton moves to 27-2-0 (8) and his 13 fight winning streak is stopped, but he looked very good and might have been able to win this.
