Pirates Rally Again; NLCS Tied at Two

Pittsburgh, Penn.--Perhaps it was getting back to Three Rivers Stadium. Or maybe it was getting All-Star Roberto Clemente back in the lineup. Whatever the reason, the Pittsburgh Pirates are back.

Matty Alou's double scored Fred Patek from first base and the Pirates slipped past the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 Wednesday in 11 innings.

The victory tied the National League Championship Series at two games each. The fifth and deciding game will take place Friday in Los Angeles.

For the second consecutive day, the Dodgers appeared on their way to the World Series. Closer Jim Brewer was unavailable due to appearing in the first three games. Thus, Los Angeles starter Don Sutton took the mound in the ninth inning with his team clinging to a 3-2 lead.

However, singles by Dave Cash and Manny Sanguillen sent Sutton to the showers and brought in left-handed reliever Fred Norman. Things looked good for the Dodgers when Pirate pitcher John Lamb bunted into a double play with Cash taking third.

Down to their final out, the Pirates forced extra innings when leadoff man Fred Patek singled past a diving Bill Russell at short stop. After Alou singled Patek to third, Los Angeles replaced Norman with Ray Lamb. The Los Angeles reliever retired Clemente on a deep fly to right.

After the Dodgers failed to score in the 10th, Pittsburgh faced Dodger lefty Claude Osteen. Willie Stargell started the inning with a single up the middle. Al Oliver then bunted Stargell into scoring position. After an intentional walk to Richie Hebner, right-hander Pete Mikkelsen came out of the Dodger bullpen.

Mikkelsen surrendered a sharp single by Cash to load the bases. Yet, the Dodger reliever escaped the situation by striking out Sanguillen and retiring pinch-hitter Gene Clines on a fly ball.

Right-hander Bruce Dalcanton sent the Dodgers down in the 11th. That set the stage for Alou's game-winner. Mikkelsen walked the pesky Patek on a close 3-2 pitch. Alou (pictured below) followed with a drive that carmoed off the left-center field wall on the first pitch he saw.

The pennant-deciding game will match Cy Young candidates Dock Ellis for Pittsburgh and Bill Singer for Los Angeles.
