Orioles Edge A's to Even Series

Baltimore--After failing to win his first outing of the American League Championsip Series, Mike Cuellar was determined to grab victory this time around. That's exactly what happened on Wednesday.

Cuellar and fellow left-hander Pete Richert teamed up to twirl a six-hitter as the Baltimore Orioles edged the Oakland A's 2-1 at Memorial Stadium. The Baltimore win forces a deciding fifth game Friday in Oakland.

The A's scored their lone run in the first inning. Bert Campaneris and Tito Francona led off the game with consecutive singles. Campeneris then scored the Oakland run as Sal Bando grounded into a double play.

From that point on, Cuellar allowed just three more hits in his seven innings of work. He walked none and struck out five before leaving for a pinch-hitter in the seventh.

Oakland starter Al Downing also pitched extremely well. The left-hander allowed just two runs before leaving the game in the eighth.

In fact, the game saw just one extra-base hit, a double by Baltimore's Merv Rettenmund in the eighth inning.

The Orioles tied the game in their at-bat. With two outs, Frank Robinson drew a walk and moved to second on a balk. A Boog Powell single moved Robinson to third. After a walk to Rettunmund loaded the bases, Dave May singled home Robinson. Downing got out of the jam by getting Brooks Robinson to ground into a force out.

Baltimore scored what proved to be the game-deciding run in the second inning. Catcher Andy Etchebarren led off with a single. Cuellar bunted him to second. A single by Don Buford moved Etchebarren to third before Davey Johnson singled him home. Downing got out of the inning by retiring Frank Robinson and Powell.

From there, the game became a pitching duel. Each team got just one player into scoring position the remainder of the game.

Friday's game five will likely match Chuck Dobson for Oakland against either right-hander Jim Hardin or lefty Grant Jackson for Baltimore.
