Pirates Pull Off Another Comeback, Advance to JIM World Series

Los Angeles--The Pittsburgh Pirates trumped even themselves this time around.

Trailing by three runs in the deciding fifth game of the National League Championship Series, the Pirates rallied past the Los Angeles Dodgers to win 5-4 Friday in extra innings.

Pittsburgh advances to the Joy in Mudville World Series.

For the third straight game it looked as though it would be the Dodgers moving onto the Fall Classic. Leading 4-1 in the top of the ninth, Los Angeles right-hander Ray Lamb headed out for his second inning of relief.

But, the Pirates had other ideas. Catcher Manny Sanguillen singled to open the inning. Surprisingly, starting pitcher Dock Ellis was allowed to bat. The Pirate hurler reached on a bunt single. A walk to leadoff man Fred Patek loaded the bases.

With starters Claude Osteen and Don Sutton warming in the bullpen, Lamb remained in the game. He got the first out of the inning when Matty Alou popped to third. That brought up Roberto Clemente. It also provided the break of the game.

The Pirate All-Star hit a high pop up behind home plate. Dodger catcher Tom Haller, however, dropped the ball on what should have been the second out of the inning.

The error proved costly as Clemente singled home a run two pitches later. A base on balls to cleanup hitter Willie Stargell made it a 4-3 game.

After a mound trip, Los Angeles stayed with Lamb. The move appeared to be working as Al Oliver flew out to short left field, leaving the bases loaded.

However, the Pirates tied the game as Richie Hebner walked on a 3-2 pitch. Lamb ended the inning when Dave Cash grounded out.

Each team squandered scoring chances over the next inning and a half. The Pirates finally broke through in the top of the 11th against Dodger closer Jim Brewer, who had endured a rough NCLS.

With one out, Oliver and Hebner both singled. With Oliver at third, Cash lofted a sacrifice fly to deep center.

Pittsburgh right-hander Dave Giusti then sent the Dodgers down in order in their final at-bat.

Clemente, who missed the first two games of the NLCS with a wrist injury, was named Series Most Valuable Player. In the three games he played Clemente batted .412 and provided the spark the Pirates seemed to have been missing in games one and two.
