Baltimore Deals Palmer to Atlanta
Before the champagne had even dried on Baltimore's Joy in Mudville World Series title, the Orioles' roster has changed.
Baltimore shipped starting pitcher Jim Palmer to the Atlanta Braves for third baseman Darrell Evans.
Thought to be a mainstay in the Oriole rotation, Palmer posted an 11-8 record with a 3.74 ERA in 31 games this past season. The 24-year-old right-hander made 20 starts for Baltimore. He appeared in just one World Series game.
Evans, 23, hit .287 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs for Atlanta. The Pasadena, Texas native had 436 at-bats with the Braves.
"We have to start looking toward the future of the franchise," said Baltimore GM Dan V. "Brooks Robinson isn't getting any younger. We believe Darrell Evans will be a future All-Star in our lineup."
Meanwhile, the Braves jumped at the chance to add a young arm to their starting rotation that already includes 19-game winners Phil Niekro and Ron Reed.
One rival GM scratched his head at the deal.
"I like Evans," said the GM who wished to remain anonymous. "But couldn't they have gotten more for Palmer?!"
