Pittsburgh Trades Clemente to Los Angeles
After battling each other in the National League Championship Series, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers created some excitement off the field.
Pittsburgh, the NL champions, traded popular All-Star right fielder Roberto Clemente and relief pitcher John Lamb to Los Angeles in exchange for outfielder Willie Crawford and minor league prospects Charlie Hough and Tom Paciorek.
Clemente, 36, is coming off an MVP-caliber season in which he hit .324 with 26 home runs and 98 RBIs. He batted a robust .538 in the World Series against Baltimore. Clemente capped his season with a Gold Glove.
Lamb, 24, appeared in 55 games for Pittsburgh. The right-hander was 3-3 with a 2.37 ERA. Lamb recorded eight saves. Ironically, he will join right-hander Ray Lamb (no relation) in the Dodger flock.
Meanwhile, Crawford played 137 games for the Dodgers. The left-handed 27-year-old batted .290 with eight homers and 68 RBIs.
Hough, 22, spent last season with the Fullerton Titans in Triple-A. The right-hander is expected to make the Pirate staff as a middle reliever.
Paciorek, 23, will likely start 1971 in Triple-A. The right-handed hitter played most of last season at Class-A Shark Island.
