Three-Way Deal Sends Former Top Pick to Orioles
The first three-way trade in Joy in Mudville history has occured on this snowy Wednesday afternoon.
First, Baltimore sent promising outfielder Don Baylor to Washington for the Senators' first two picks in the June amateur draft.
The Orioles then shipped those two picks to San Diego in exchange for pitcher Jon Matlack, the No. 1 overall pick in last June's draft. Baltimore and San Diego also agreed to swap third-round picks.
Matlack, 21, posted a dismal 5-18 record for the Padres during the 1970 season. The left-hander gave up 29 home runs in 181.1 innings.
Baylor, 21, spent last year in the Oriole farm system. However, he was expected to have pushed Dave May and Paul Blair for Baltimore's starting center field job this spring.
Washington GM Dan S. likes what he sees in the right-handed hitting Baylor.
"The Senators are starting to put together some young talent," said the Washington braintrust. "We know we won't compete for at least two years, but we have a young core of sluggers who will be together for a long time... or until they get traded tomorrow."
