It was the original word used by Franklin P. Adams in the famous poem "Baseball's Sad Lexicon". Adams was trying to portray the New York image as one of Scottish thrift - "ruthlessly pricking our thriftlon bubble" - but in the end it just didn't work out so he made up the word gonfalon instead.
Actually, it's a play on my screen name and the Athlon sports annuals series.
