Making a late charge at .500 & Cubs Wrap Up
September starts off well until 9/6 when Brant Brown goes down with a fractured ankle and will be missing the next 7 months as a result. On the season he had been hitting .252/.300/.392 (.692 OPS) with 18 doubles and 13 HR in 452 AB. He only had 27 BB (5.97%) against 101 K (22.3%) but it will open up a spot for one of the newcomers at least.
I decide with the spot open to call up RF Pedro Valdes who's been hitting .256/.352/.399 (.751 OPS) in 476 AB at AAA. He has 45 doubles(!) and 67 BB vs. 81 K.
As the season officially draws closed, here are the final NL Central Standings. I have to admit, given the way the season started, I couldn't be happier with how we finished. One thing is clear though, we'll have our work cut out for us if we want to get some success in this tough division. We finished out September at 12-13.
Houston: 92-70
Pittsburgh: 88-74
Cincinnati: 87-75
Chicago: 78-84 (Pyth: 75-87)
St. Louis: 69-93
Overall, we were great at home (Gotta love Wrigley Field) by going 47-34 but we were a miserable 31-50 on the road.
1st Half of the Year: 35-47 (.427)
2nd Half of the Year: 43-37 (.538)
Our final run differential was 623 RS vs. 676 RA (-53). That just shows how solid our pitching was throughout the season.
Here are final batting stats...
SS Shawon Dunston: .276/.283/.416 (.699) in 634 AB with 33 doubles, 10 triples, and 12 HR. He had 7 BB vs. 107 K... yes, folks, the guy with the most at bats on the club drew 7 WALKS in 634 AB. That's... I can't even mentally comprehend that.
1B Mark Grace: .291/.383/.476 (.859) in 584 AB. He had 45 doubles and 19 HR along with 82 RBI and 90 BB vs. 57 K. He also scored 97 R.
CF Brian McRae: .227/.314/.361 (.675) in 546 AB. He had 31 doubles and 10 HR with 63 BB vs. 85 K. He also led the team with 10 SB.
C Tyler Houston: .274/.301/.393 (.695) in 521 AB. He had 41 doubles but only 5 HR along with 21 BB vs. 110 K. Well, at least he hit for a high average.
2B Tony Batista: Our 23 year old waiver phenom hit .219/.260/.336 (.596) in 512 AB but did have 25 doubles and 11 HR. Of course he also only had 28 BB vs. 93 K.
3B Dave Hansen: A true pay dirt kinda guy with his .257/.361/.358 (.719) line in 505 AB. He had 84 BB (16.6%) vs. 112 K and scored 67 R.
3B Kevin Orie: .250/.333/.359 (.692) in 156 AB but had 18 RBI along with 19 BB vs. 26 K in that span. Only 25 years old, he should be a solid contributor in the future.
LF Robin Jennings: .262/.298/.376 (.674) in 149 AB with 9 doubles and 23 RBI.
LF Brooks Kieschnick: .254/.359/.403 (.762) in 67 AB with 13 RBI and 11 BB vs. 14 K.
1B Scott Stahoviak: A bit of a disappointment at .157/.204/.176 (.380) in 51 AB but I attribute that to a small sample size.
Pitching wise, here's how our squad finished things up.
MR Kent Bottenfield: 1.78 ERA and 4 S in 55.2 IP with 39 K (6.36) and 19 BB (3.10). The key was that he only allowed 3 HR.
MR Bob Patterson: 2.51 ERA and 5 S in 61.0 IP with 52 K (7.67) and 21 BB (3.10).
SP Kevin Tapani: 15-7 with an ERA of 2.53 in 220.2 IP. He had 139 K (5.68) and 50 BB (2.04) but he only allowed 175 H (7.15).
MR Tim Worrell: 3.40 ERA in 55.2 IP with 47 K (7.66) and 21 BB (3.42).
SP Rick Helling: 13-12 with an ERA of 3.47 in 197.1 IP. He had 133 K (6.07) and a bit more worrisome 93 BB (4.25) but got help from his defense with only 168 HA. Probably one of the biggest steals of the season IMO.
SP Miguel Batista: 7-8 while playing starter & reliever. Had 133.2 IP with 88 K (5.95) and allowed only 8 HR.
SP Frank Castillo: 10-10 with an ERA of 3.50 in 149 IP. He had 94 K (5.68) and 56 BB (3.38).
MR Terry Adams: 7-2 with an ERA of 3.82 in 66 IP. 54 K (7.36) and only allowed 2 HR.
MR Rodney Myers: 3.99 ERA in 47.1 IP with 5 HRA.
CL Mel Rojas: 2-13 but had 42 S and a 4.26 ERA in 63.1 IP. He had 73 K (10.41) and 27 BB (3.85) but his weakness was the long ball as he allowed 13 HR.
SP Steve Traschel: 10-14 with an ERA of 4.78 in 201.2 IP. He had 131 K (5.86) but allowed 34 HR on the season and walked 77 (3.44).
MR Amaury Telemaco: 5.02 ERA in 43 IP with 36 K (7.53) and 8 HRA.
For those wondering... Sammy Sosa finished the season with a line of .236/.265/.413 in 618 AB with 25 HR and 23 BB vs. 159 K. With Oakland he hit .300/.327/.567 in 203 AB with 13 HR.
The playoffs will feature: Boston (87-75), Oakland (93-69), Seattle (88-74), Cleveland (90-72), Pittsburgh (88-74), Atlanta (103-59), San Diego (88-74), and Houston (92-70).
Since this is a diary focused on the Chicago Cubs, don't expect an in-depth report on the playoffs in the next update as I'll probably just update with the results and the World Series winner.
You can expect award winners and any notable moments during the season in the next update.
