Start of Summer and the Boys of the Draft

Bad news hits on 6/7 as Brooks Kieschnick goes down for 1-2 weeks with back spasms. The one bit of good luck out of this is that it allows us to get a chance to call up Pedro Valdes to help man the position with Alex Diaz.

On 6/14 Tony Batista goes down for 2 weeks thanks to a concussion. Not good news. I'm forced to call up Rey Sanchez, he of the .656 OPS at AAA. At least he has a glove.

We start off the MLB Draft with the 11th pick. Since we have college and high school feeder leagues, I can actually look at stats to make my selections which is a really nice thing to do.

1.11 (C): LF Bill Archer. He hit .333/.435/.533 in only 90 AB but had 4 HR and 16 BB (17.8%) vs. 21 K.
1.16 (C): CF Rudy King. He hit .281/.395/.596 in 146 AB with 12 HR and 25 BB vs. 21 K.
2.09 (C): 1B Daniel Markham. He hit .396/.503/.806 in 134 AB with 16 HR and 25 BB vs. 21 K.
2.11 (C): 1B Michael von Meyer. He hit .360/.452/.710 in 186 AB with 14 HR and 26 BB vs. 24 K.
3.11 (HS): C Roberto Enriquez. He hit .384/.475/.646 in 99 AB with 20 BB vs. 13 K.
4.11 (HS): SS Colin Long. He hit .402/.487/.515 in 132 AB with 20 BB vs. 4 K.
5.11 (HS): SS Miguel Enriquez. He hit .319/.422/.442 in 113 AB with 17 BB vs. 7 K.
6.11 (HS): MR Brian Walker. 3.82 ERA with 46 K vs. 14 BB in 35.2 IP.
7.11 (HS): CL Francisco Espinoza. 5.06 ERA with 23 K vs. 3 BB in 26.2 IP.
8.11 (HS): MR Don Strawn. 6.14 ERA with 32 K vs. 3 BB in 29.1 IP.
9.11 (C): 1B Patrick Terry. He hit .345/.438/.613 in 168 AB with 12 HR and 24 BB vs. 39 K.
10.11 (HS): MR Ruben Estrada. 8.31 ERA with 27 K vs. 7 BB in 21.2 IP.
11.11 (C): MR Ben Powers. 2.57 ERA with 29 K vs. 10 BB in 28.0 IP.
12.11 (HS): MR Menno Oolbekkink. 5.91 ERA with 35 K vs. 13 BB in 32.0 IP.
13.11 (HS): 2B Aaron Smith. He hit .325/.359/.423 in 123 AB with 7 BB vs. 12 K.
14.11 (C): MR Juan Padilla. 6.21 ERA with 37 K vs. 15 BB in 37.2 IP.
15.11 (HS): MR Mike Irwin. 9.82 ERA with 27 K vs. 7 BB in 22.0 IP.
16.11 (C): MR Yuki Hirata. 6.00 ERA with 24 K vs. 6 BB in 24.0 IP.
17.11 (HS): MR Manuel Romin. 4.58 ERA with 25 K vs. 25 BB in 35.1 IP.

And thus ends the inaugural draft of the College/HS Feeder Leagues. Surprised at the ERA stats but meh...

I make my first trade of the season with the Baltimore Orioles as well.

I traded SP Frank Castillo for C Mel Rosario who is 25 but has hit .271/.392/.453 at AAA in 258 AB with 9 HR and 51 BB vs. 40 K. Castillo is 0-9 with a 6.29 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP.

This allows me to call up Geremi "Gio" Gonzalez and his 2.33 ERA too. He'll fit into the rotation in the #4 slot.

On 6/22, Brooks is healthy and I send down Pedro Valdes who hit a paltry .208/.278/.292 in 48 AB for us.

On 6/29 The Phenom is healthy but I actually have a dilemma! Rey Sanchez in 42 AB is hitting .310/.383/.357. Imagine that! I send Brant Brown down because he was literally bench fodder.

NL Central Standings
The New Evil Empire: 47-25
Pittsburgh: 43-38
St. Louis: 41-41
Cincinnati: 38-43
Chicago: 25-57. Yeah... and remember Wrigley Field? We're 8-30 at home but 17-27 on the road.

I unfortunately realize that Hero can't make any contact whatsoever as his .213/.267/.322 line tells me and I'm stuck shaking my head in misery. The guy has decent power and a batting eye but just can't make contact worth spit.

I decide to try an experiment and send Hero down to AAA while calling up Pedro Valdes to man 1B. The guy's never played 1B but what the hell... he can hit pretty well with more at bats.

In 2 starts, Gio Gonzalez has a 2.30 ERA in 15.2 IP. He's already the best starter on this dreadful squad now. He's also a perfect 2-0.

I demote Kevin Foster and his 10.40 ERA and call up Tim Kubinski who had an ERA of 2.30 in 15.2 IP at AAA with 14 K vs. 3 BB. I also send down Rodney Myers and his 5.63 ERA to be replaced by Amaury Telemaco and his 3.80 ERA with 25 K vs. 9 BB in 23.2 IP.
