July is the turn of the screw...

"I don't mean to pick you apart, you see, but I can't help it" - Alanis Morissette All I Really Want

Remember how people say that defense wins championships in football and in baseball, pitching and defense up the middle wins championships?

I'm clearly missing the memo because my defense is... deplorable which explains the sucktacular pitching.

Keys for next year: Get a defensive minded power hitting 1B and shift Pedro Valdes to RF (85 range).

Get a better defensive 2B... and a defensive CF (a guy with pop, unlike Doug Glanville at AAA). Clearly my team will be upgraded during next year's free agency.

You'll be saying goodbye to roughly 10 Chicago Cubs players by the time free agency hits.

But first... we still have a couple months. We went 6-19 in July and currently sport a 29-78 record (0.271 win%). We're now 33.5 GB of the New Evil Empire, ugh.

Our best hitter overall is Mickey Morandini hitting .318/.425/.404 in 314 AB with 24 doubles and 55 BB vs. 45 K. A large part of that (288 AB) has been delivered against right handers.

We have no power at all on this squad with Tony Batista leading everybody with 13 HR in 412 AB. Only one other player, Pedro Valdes has 10 HR in 382 AB. Part of it is platooning players but still, there is no power potential on this squad.

Although Cecil Fielder and Ellis Burks have combined for 13 HR, 53 RBI, and a line of .207/.310/.349 (0.659 OPS) so gotta love cheap & old free agents.

The pitching is woeful although it's not their fault (mine for deciding who cares about defense). Bobby Jones in particular I feel bad for... he had a 2.94 ERA in 7 starts in July but went 1-5.

For the year, Jeremy Fish has a 5.52 ERA in 14.2 IP with 18 K vs. 14 BB and 3 HRA.

Rick Helling has still been solid with a 4.97 ERA in 50.2 IP with 6 HRA and 42 K vs. 30 BB (1.40 K/BB).

Some prospect news...
Daniel Markham: 23 years old and struggling. Has 8 HR and a 0.579 OPS between AA and AAA in 354 AB.

Bill Archer: 23 years old and also struggling. Has 6 HR and a 0.668 OPS between AA and AAA in 379 AB.

Jake St. John: 22 years old at AA. Has a 3.34 ERA in 64.2 IP with 41 K vs. 21 BB (2,94 BB/9).

Michael von Meyer: 23 years old at AA. Has 4 HR and a 0.698 OPS in 385 AB.

Patrick Terry: 23 years old and doing okay. Has 9 HR and a 0.665 OPS between A and AA in 408 AB.

Dave Lees: 22 years old at A. Had a 2.60 ERA in 52.0 IP with 19 K vs. 14 BB before getting injured for 8 months with a ruptured UCL (elbow).

Menno Oolbekkink: 20 years old at A. Has a 3.24 ERA in 25.0 IP with 12 K vs. 10 BB.

I might entertain 1B Scott "Hero" Stahoviak as the RH hitter in a 1B platoon next season as he's decent defensively (60) and has a 0.929 OPS vs. a 0.658 OPS vs. LHP.
