August 24, 1879 - Sunday Base Ball Report

Boston Red Caps 38-23
Cincinnati Reds 36-18
Syracuse Stars 35-25
Chicago White Stockings 32-28
Troy Trojans 30-27
Providence Grays 22-39
Cleveland Blues 21-36
Buffalo Bisons 19-37

As the battle for National League supremacy continues, Syracuse is quietly moving toward the top of the standings. The Stars were expected to be one of the NL's worst teams this year, and indeed their lineup doesn't look like much - catcher Mike Hooper (.278) is the best-hitting regular. However, thanks to some good pitching and defense they are holding their own even against the established powerhouses of the league.
