1882 Final Standings: National League & American Association
1882 WORLD SERIES: BALTIMORE (AA) vs. BOSTON (NL)
Anson's 4-4 day highlights Red Caps win
Game 1: Boston opens the bottom of the first with 3 straight singles including a Cap Anson RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. In the 2nd inning, the trio of Wood-Meyerle-Anson hit three straight singles to give Boston a 2-0 lead. Baltimore ties it up in the top 3rd with 3 singles and 2 errors. Cap Anson added his 4th hit, a RBI single, in the bottom of the 8th. That’s all Jim Whitney would need as he rung up 6 batters as Boston won 4-2.
Sloppy Baltimore fielding and key Boston hitting allow Caps to win inaugural World Series
Game 2: Cap Anson opened up the scoring with his 5th hit of the series, a RBI single to put Boston up 1-0. In the second, a John O’Rourke triple followed by a Jim Whitney groundout nets Boston a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, a Jimmy Wood error keys a 2 run Baltimore inning where they tie up the game at 2. In the 4th, a Baltimore error leads to Boston’s third run before Levi Meyerle bashes a 3 run double to put Boston up 6-2. Another Baltimore error in the inning leads to another run. The Red Caps tack on 3 more runs in the seventh building their lead to 10-2. After getting a run back in the seventh to make it 10-3, the Orioles would have back-to-back-to-back errors allowing Boston to score 3 more runs making it 13-3 in the eighth. Jim Whitney would handle the rest as he tossed his second straight gem of the series allowing Boston to capture the first ever World Series, 2 games to 0.
