...and when you pay him $18M over two years, that's a dumber move than paying Longoria $17M over six years, since there's a very good chance they'd end up paying more over the six years were he to go to arbitration in years 4-6. I don't think there's much of a downside for the Rays in doing this deal. There's also very little downside for Longoria to do the deal, since he's likely to try to renegotiate a new long term deal after year four if he does as well or better than projected.
