True enough, by today's rules. But in the 1870s, the pennant winner was simply the team with the most wins.

September 14, 1879 - Sunday Base Ball Report

Boston Red Caps 47-27
Cincinnati Reds 44-24
Syracuse Stars 40-30
Chicago White Stockings 35-35
Troy Trojans 34-37
Cleveland Blues 30-41
Providence Grays 27-47
Buffalo Bisons 26-42

Boston and Cincinnati split the first two games of their head-to-head matchup. For the Reds, it looks like their pennant hopes will come down to winning the final game between the two teams and then hoping lowly Providence can steal a few from the Beantowners.
