The manual will tell you how to set things up so that you have the players appearing in the correct years and on the correct teams, including expansions. However, depending on whether you control all teams or not (there is a setting for that), the AI will determine its own lineups and will begin trading and signing players if you let it. People have also asked what happens when a historical league reaches 2007 or 2008; at that point you have to start generating fictional players as needed rather than importing them as usual from Lahmans.
