HITTERS BY POSITION - CATCHER
(asterisked players will be free agents this offseason)
Charlie Bennett, Troy Trojans (0-39-.236-1) - Bennett is one of the best-fielding catchers in base ball, but he's also an adequate hitter at best.
Emil Gross, Providence Grays (2-27-.304-0) - This rookie was one of the few bright spots in the Grays' dismal season. He seems to have the talent to be a top hitter for years to come.
Dick Higham, Cincinnati Reds* (0-43-.308-1) - Had his third consecutive very productive year for Cincinnati, seems to be very happy here, and at age 28 is still in the prime of his career. So why is he leaving this offseason? Many observers feel this is merely a negotiating ploy, and that he will be back with Cincinnati in 1880.
Doc Kennedy, Cleveland Blues (1-50-.225-1) - This 26-year-old rookie had a rather forgettable season in 1879, and some observers believe he may not have a starting job in 1880.
Mike McGeary, Syracuse Stars* (0-23-.241-12) - He did nothing this year to shake his reputation as more of a utility player than a legitimate starter.
Cal McVey, Boston Red Caps (0-62-.333-11) - Another great season for McVey. He is currently the career leader in hits with 905, and at age 30 he seems likely to continue to be a star for the foreseeable future.
"Orator Jim" O'Rourke, Chicago White Stockings (2-35-.287-0) - One of the few Chicago players who did not suffer from injuries this season, he nevertheless had the worst-hitting season of his eight-year career. Signed with the team through 1882.
Frank Selman, Buffalo Bisons (3-47-.263-5) - A dependable catcher, but he is with his fifth team since the formation of the National League. Hopes to have a somewhat longer career in Buffalo.
And the award for best catcher of 1879 goes to... CAL McVEY OF THE BOSTON RED CAPS. An easy call this time, as McVey wins the award for the fifth time in his career.
