Depending on how quickly you play your historical game, it is almost inevitable that you will outrun the Lahmann database. Sure, you might get up to the current season just in time for the Lahmann database to be updated, but if you reach the current season that fast, then obviously you're going to exceed the Lahmann database soon after.
If you manage all of your games, then it would take you quite a long time to play more than 25 years of baseball. But, if you tend to do a lot of quick sims and you don't want to end up using fictional players for 2008 and beyond, then historical play is probably best reserved for only playing up to 2007 and leaving it at that.
