May 9, 1880 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Cleveland Blues 4-1
Providence Grays 4-1
Boston Red Caps 3-2
Chicago White Stockings 2-2
Cincinnati Reds 2-2
Troy Trojans 2-3
Buffalo Bisons 1-4
Worcester Ruby Legs 1-4
The early surprise of the league has been the good play of the Providence Grays. Mired in last place the past two seasons, Providence has suddenly given their long-suffering fans a reason to hope. Of course, the reality is that the strong start is mostly due to two players: Frank McCarton and Emil Gross, who between them have gone 25 for 48 (.521) over the team's first five games.
In other news, Worcester's building program received some bad news this past week. Young infielder Art Whitney bruised his cheekbone in Wednesday's game. Attempting to play through it, he reinjured and fractured the same cheekbone on Saturday, and he is now expected to be out for the rest of the season. Not the most auspicious start for his rookie campaign.
