NLDS: San Francisco v. Washington

NLDS: San Francisco v. Washington
Giants step on Wild Card Washington
San Francisco took a Giant step forward in their quest for a World Series championship by defeating the Washington Nationals in four games.

Game 1: Washington's Westbrook whipped
Washington Nationals starting pitcher Jake Westbrook (18-10, 3.39 ERA) had a day to forget in Game 1 of the NLDS as he was battered for five runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. His counterpart, San Francisco's Homer Bailey (11-7, 4.25 ERA) fared significantly better as he let up just one run on seven hits and two walks, striking out six in six innings. Bailey helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run, three RBI and a pair of doubles in the 7-2 win.

Game 2: Nats late rally ties series at 1-1

It was a pitcher's duel in Game 2 that resulted in reliever George Sherrill (7-3, 3 saves, 3.48 ERA) being hit with the loss after giving up two runs in the eighth inning of a 2-1 Washington win.
After seven shutout innings from starter Doug Waechter (11-14, 4.52 ERA), Sherrill was handed the ball for the eighth inning with a slim 1-0 lead. Sherrill immediately struggled with his control, walking the first two batters he saw on 10 pitches before giving up a game-tying single to A.J. Pierzynski (.305, 26 HR, 84 RBI). Jose Reyes (.305, 21 HR, 72 RBI, 62 SB), the runner on second, stole third base before Sherrill was able to get a popup on the infield and a strikeout, leaving the go ahead run on third with two outs and Ryan Zimmerman (.288, 14 HR, 79 RBI) coming to the plate. Zimmerman worked the count full before drawing a walk to load the bases. Sherrill was yanked for Chad Cordero (9-6, 2 saves, 3.13 ERA) in hopes "Chief" could end the threat. He too, however, struggled with his control and walked Alex Sanchez (.278, 6 HR, 54 RBI) on five pitches, pushing the go ahead run across the plate. Cordero retired the next batter on a popup to first base.
Nats closer Manny Parra (5-5, 44 saves, 1.85 ERA) came in for the ninth, retiring the side in order and picking up the save.

Game 3: Giants take 2-1 lead with 8-2 win

It was the Giants' battery combo that led to a Game 3 win over the Nationals as the San Francisco pitchers gave up just two runs while catcher Jorge Posada (.275, 15 HR, 62 RBI) went 3-for-4 with three doubles.
Giants starter Dan Haren (9-14, 4.38 ERA) let up two runs over seven innings on six hits and one walk, striking out three.
Veteran Rich Aurilia (.289, 26 HR, 103 RBI) hit a solo home run in the second inning for the Giants.

Game 4: Walton homer sinks Nationals
Chad Walton (.199, 4 HR, 27 RBI, 187 AB, 114 G) didn't do much in the regular season but found himself in the starting lineup for Game 4 and came up big. With the Giants up 1-0, the San Francisco thirdbaseman hit a three-run shot off Jake Westbrook (18-10, 3.39 ERA), giving his team the cushion it needed en route to a 5-3 victory over the Washington Nationals to advance to the NLCS.
Giants hurler Ryan Vogelsong (11-2, 3.39 ERA) picked up the win with an eight inning effort in which he struck out five, walked three and gave up just two hits.
