I can see the broken rib happening. Maybe not stretching right, over-extending on a pitch, or reaching for a grounder. Ribs can be sensitive. I, the pitcher, backed up a throw at the plate and got trucked by a runner. My ribs were hurt for weeks. Probably broken but I never went to a doctor.
Till this day, if I don't stretch right it'll hurt after a few piches.
With Hughes' injury history, I'm not surprised.
By the way, for those that have been watching the YES broadcasts, I have to say that I was impressed with their evaluation of Kennedy. It was spot on. The way they were talking about his reluctance to throw over the plate but the fact that he actually has good control.
It's wy I'm not extremely worried about him. He's a corners-guy and he isn't getting any calls. His pitches are just off the black.
To me, Hughes has been struggling worse. He is all over the mound with no true direction. Kennedy just needs to stop trying to be so fine (oh yea, he's hot. woo hoo!)
