October 2008 - Milwaukee Brewers
Manager and GM Fritsche

15th October 2008

We are now at the point of no return, one more loss and the season is over. We never faced this point during last seasons road to the World Series. Of course Webb, Bush and Capuano are capable of giving us three good starts in a row, but will the bullpen have three good days in a row as well? The Mets pitching seems from another planet: when their starter struggles, they still have the best bullpen in the game.

Game #168 – New York [6-1] (D. Guerra 1-0, 1.13 ERA) at Milwaukee [4-3] (B. Webb 1-1, 5.93 ERA)

2B C. Izturis - RF G. Gross - LF R. Braun - 1B P. Fielder - CF J. Upton - C J. Estrada - 3B M. Reynolds - SS A. Escobar

The game started as another one dominated by pitching. We took nevertheless a 2-0 thanks to a Fielder RBI double in the third. So all we needed was to protect the lead until the end. The Mets were stroke by bad luck when also their replacement 3B Tatis was injured and Carp with no previous 3B experience had to finish the game. Carp commited an error on his first chance allowing us to take a 3-1 lead after four innings. Webb worked hard but struggled finding the strike zone. He had five walks after five innings, but got some help by Estrada and a couple of double plays. We kept on scoring against 19 year old Guerra making it 5-1 after six innings. After Carp threw another ball away the score was 7-1 and Webb handed the game to the bullpen. Eventually the bullpen did fine and defensive replacement Cain added two more runs.
Curious to see what the Mets do with 3B after this game.

New York at Milwaukee: 1-9

W: B. Webb (2-1); L: D. Guerra (1-1)
HR: - / J. Upton (1)
SB: O. Hudson (1) / -
CS: J. Reyes (2) / -
E: M. Carp 2 / -
MoM: B. Webb
- 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 1 K

New York leads series, 3 to 2.

Elsewhere:

Tampa Bay
at Boston: 14-8 (10)

W: C. Ray (1-1), L: H. Okajima (0-1)
HR: - / K. Youkilis (1)
Boston leads series, 3 to 2.

Okajima and Papelbon suffered an epic meltdown in the top of the tenth, allowing seven hits, walking two and getting only one out.

The Mets also placed Tatis on the DL. Ruben Gotay (.283, 1 HR, 7 RBI) who played only 15 games in his career at 3B gets the call. We will never know why Shawn Bowman (.255, 1 HR, 12 RBI - AAA) didn't get promotod. At least the can play 3B. Maybe Bud Black didn't want to send a Canadian to the World Series?
