Blasters Rip All-Stars 7-4
At Mountain View Stadium in Colfax, the Blasters pounced on Elnora for a 7-0 lead after five and came away with a 7-4 decision. Light-hitting shortstop Tommy Stanley (.200) slammed two homers, scored three times and drove in four runs to pace Colfax's 11-hit offense. The top hitter for the All-Stars was center fielder Rusty Gilbert (.309) with 2-for-5 and a three-run homer. Southpaw Alex Castille (7-3 3.47) got credit for the victory, going seven innings and giving up four runs and eight hits with four Ks and two BBs. Reliever Pat Langlais (0-2 3.44) picked the his 5th save with two innings of work. He allowed no runs and four hits with two strikeouts. Elnora starter Sean Sykes (6-3 4.17) sustained the loss, being tagged for seven runs and nine hits, although only three were earned. He departed in the fifth frame.
Colfax (27-19) is a half-game in front of second place Far Mountain (27-20) in the RU North Division. Elnora (19-29) is last, nine games out.
Vigilantes Win 4th Straight, Edge FM 4-3
In Volusia, the Vigilantes rode the strong right arm of Johnny Szwak to triumph 4-3 in ten innings over the second place Far Mountain Redhawks. Szwak (2-1 3.23) set down 13 batters on strikes and tossed a complete game as he checked Far Mountain on seven hits and gave up five free passes. Szwak even scored the winning run by leading off with a single, was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a ground out, then came home on Alex Luna's line drive single to right. Sonny Elliott (6-4 2.97) also went the route, permitting only six hits, fanned five and walked four in defeat.
The Redhawks (27-20) suffered their fourth successive loss. Volusia (21-26) is fifth in the division and is 6.5 games out.
A's Romp over Vipers 9-3
In Valmara, Glasco tore up the homestanding Vipers 9-3 at War Memorial Stadium. The Athletics laced 15 hits in the game and were led by second baseman Barry McCord (.292) with 3-for-5, three RBIs and two runs and left fielder Ox Beauvais (.366) with 2-for-5, two runs and two RBIs, including his 11th homer. Beauvais is leading the Ruthlandian Union with a .364 batting average. Also contributing were center fielder Chet Reynolds (.308) with 3-for-5, including a double, two runs and an RBI and shortstop Kyle Ballentine (.294) was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Portsider Bill Darby (2-0 2.20) went all the way for the win. He scattered ten hits effectively, struck out five and walked three. Valmara had many chances to cash in, but failed to do it. Second baseman Scott Kaminski (.409) was one of the few that did any damage. He unloaded a home run in the eighth. Paul Schoenfeld (3-5 4.98) was the losing pitcher. Glasco ripped him for six runs and nine hits by the time he went to the showers in the sixth.
The A's (23-21) are in the third spot in the division standings, three games behind Colfax (27-19), while Valmara (22-24) is fourth, five games out.
