Pittsburgh, Penn.--The Pittsburgh Pirates have been down this road before.

A day after getting shut out 9-0 by Houston, the Pirates pounded Houston 5-1 Tuesday at Three Rivers Stadium to force a deciding game five in the National League Championship Series.

Two years ago Pittsburgh found itself in this very same situation. Back in 1970, the Pirates rallied from a two games-to-one deficit against Los Angeles and wound up in the Joy in Mudville World Series.

In Tuesday's victory, ace Dock Ellis was at his Cy Young candidate-best. The right-hander scattered nine hits and held Houston at bay all day. It was a complete turnaround from his poor performance in the playoff opener.

Meanwhile, the Pirate offense broke out its thunder. Willie Stargell, the odds-on favovite to win the National League Most Valuable Player Award, cracked a first-inning home run off Astro starter Ken Forsch.

Pittsburgh center fielder Al Oliver hit a pair of home runs, one off Forsch in the sixth and one off reliever Larry Gura in the eighth to put the game away.

The fifth and final game is Thursday at Houston's Astrodome. Pittsburgh's Bob Moose (1-0) and Houston's Don Wilson (0-1) will rematch from their game two confrontation.
