July 4, 1880 - Sunday Base Ball Report

Cleveland Blues 24-9
Chicago White Stockings 21-14
Troy Trojans 19-13
Cincinnati Reds 18-14
Boston Red Caps 17-18
Buffalo Bisons 16-19
Worcester Ruby Legs 11-23
Providence Grays 9-25

Since their terrible 6-9 start, which led some commentators (ahem) to question whether their time as a contender had passed, the Chicago White Stockings have gone 15-5 to jump right back into the race. Although the Blues continue to win, Chicago has a three-game series in Cleveland from July 10-14, which could really tighten things up.

Chicago's resurgence has been led by their rookie pitcher Larry Corcoran and some timely hitting by familiar veterans Levi Meyerle, Joe Start, Jim O'Rourke and John Bass. If they can come up with a strong series against Cleveland, they might just be in the running for their fourth National League pennant.
