Week Five: 5/1-5/7

5/1: SF 9 @ ARI 10 - LP: Feliciano (0-2, 6.97 ERA), BS: Feliciano (1); HR: Bonds (7) [739]
I'll start off with some good news: Fred Lewis won Rookie of the Month for the National League in April. It was announced today and the clubhouse celebrated a little bit before batting practice. I sprung for the plaque and we decided we were going to honor him when we returned to San Francisco on Thursday. Also, Ryan Zimmerman made the flight from Dulles to Phoenix to join the team following the trade I made with their GM. I had to re-DFA Feliz in order to make room on the 25-man roster and get him off the 40-man roster to make room. This game was tied going into the third and then the Giants opened it up with a big inning of five runs. Frandsen led off with a line drive double, then Cain grounded out. Richardson singled Frandsen home. Lewis singled Richardson to second. Zimmerman grounded out, moving Lewis and Richardson over to second and third, respectively, and then Barry Bonds doubled them both home. Durham singles Bonds home (to watch Bonds run like that was amazing, but I swear I thought I heard his knees crunch), Aurilia moves Durham to third on another single, Molina's single scores Durham and moves Aurilia to third. Then the guy who opened the inning, Frandsen, returned to be struck out by the reliever, Adam Peterson. It was a great inning to watch. In the end, though, Pedro Feliciano, my New York pickup, blew the save in the eighth, giving up four runs when we were up by three. Heartbreaking loss and I can only hope we can salvage this two-game series tomorrow with a win.

5/2: SF 4 @ ARI 5 (10 innings) - LP: Valverde (0-1, 1.86 ERA); HR: Molina (6)
Morris had a decent outing today, managing to hold on to a tie through to the seventh inning before turning it over to the bullpen. Hennessey kept Arizona scoreless, and we were tied going into the ninth, when Valverde took the ball. I guess Arizona knows their closer well, because in the bottom of the tenth, with Chad Tracy on third and Hairston on second, Stephen Drew singled in the winning run to win the game. We're headed home to play the Padres, and all I can day is that Zimmerman's becoming a fast friend among the players and staff.

5/3: SD 0 @ SF 1 - WP: Atchison (1-0, 2.45 ERA), SV: Valverde (7, 1.69 ERA)
Zito must've heard my disappointment somehow, because for nearly five innings today, he looked good. Real good. He went 4.2 IP, with 7 Ks, allowing only 3 hits. His curveball was working good. My only disappointment with today's win was the fact that he didn't stay in long enough to get the win, but as he pitched nearly 100 by the second out, Boch didn't want to risk blowing his arm out too soon. Scott Atchinson, whom we picked up in free agency in the off season, came in to take over and he was determined to make sure Zito's hard work didn't go to waste. He stayed in for 2 1/3 innings, struck out three, and threw nearly 40 pitches. Correia came in to take over, maintaining the shutout for the rest of the inning. Feliciano, desperate to redeem himself for Tuesday's debacle, also picked up a Hold. Valverde came in and took a little while to settled down, walking two, but he got his three outs and earned a save. Ryan Zimmerman had the lone RBI; knocking in Antoan Richardson from second in the bottom of the first. All goose eggs from there, but one run did it for us and the fans were grateful.

5/4: SD 3 @ SF 8 - WP: Lincecum (2-2, 4.76 ERA); HR: Richardson (1), Molina (7)
Let's hear it for the boy! Tiny Tim Lincencum (9.0 IP, 9 K) goes complete game once more, but this time, it's a win. He duked it out against Greg Maddux and came out on top, thanks to the offense. Though I thought he should've been declared as Player of the Game, they went with Antoan Richardson (4-4, .561, HR, 3 RBIs, 4 R, 4 SB). Richardson muscled it right over the left field fence into the second row of seats to drive in three runs, and he was all smiles. The fan even brought it back to him after the game, which I thought was really nice of them. I took his name down and passed it to the front office to maybe get him a signed picture or ball. It was a special moment for Antoan, because his family flew in from Nassau to watch him play this weekend. Rich Aurilia was injured while running the bases in the fourth inning, we placed him on the 15-day DL giving us an opportunity to activate Noah Lowry from the DL.

Note: I finally dumped Tyler Walker off to the Yankees, receiving a couple of minor leaguers in return.

5/5: MIL 1 @ SF 10 - WP: Cain (4-2, 5.20 ERA); HR: Molina (8), Durham (7)
Not to be outdone by his younger counterpart, Matt Cain (9.0 IP, 9 K) stepped up and gave the bullpen a second day off, earning a CG. And he earned SION's PotG honors. If I had to pick a runner-up, I'd go with Kevin "The Ocho" Frandsen. He was all over the ball today, with a double and a triple, driving in two of the ten RBIs. Molina also showed off his bat, with two singles and a two-run homer, driving in two RBIs. Durham grand-slammed off of Jose Capellan in the bottom of the fourth, which drove the fans absolutely nuts. Outstanding Saturday afternoon at the ballpark.

5/6: MIL 7 @ SF 5 - LP: Atchison (1-1, 3.75), BS: Lowry (1, 8.10 ERA)
I have to hand it to Ned Yost. After getting decimated yesterday, he adjusted very quickly. First, they took Antoan Richardson's speed off the table, by playing him shallow. It forced him to try and hit the ball into the outfield, but all he seemed to hit were groundballs to second or third. We're going to need to work on his hitting a bit more, as I expect this isn't the first team we'll face who will adjust themselves accordingly. Without Richardson or Lewis (day off) tearing up the base paths, there was no one to single in as before. Boch tried to adjust his game plan, but I think Yost had his number. Liriano did a yeoman's job in the first six innings, but Noah Lowry blew the lead in the eighth and then Atchison just had a bad hand dealt to him in the ninth. Tough loss, but I hope they learn from it.

5/7: MIL 9 @ SF 3 - LP: Morris (2-4, 4.24 ERA); HR: Gonzalez (1), Molina (9)
Antoan Richardson was honored by the National League, as their Player of the Week for last week's performance. I'm proud of our rookies; they're proving to be good decisions in spite of the losses. And speaking of losses... Unfortunately, it just wasn't Morris' night. He gave up an early lead to the Brew Crew in the first three innings of the game. Going into the top of the fourth, they led 4-1 and Morris came out with two on, and Atchison couldn't hold them. Feliciano came in, gave up three more and it was downhill from there. Boch started Luis Gonzalez at third tonight, to give Zimmerman the night off, and he hit his first HR of the season, a solo homer to center. Molina also managed a solo HR to right field. Well, we have an off day tomorrow before we play Houston on Wednesday. Boch has a team meeting tomorrow morning and I hope that it does some good.
