July 25, 1880 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Chicago White Stockings 30-17
Cleveland Blues 29-15
Troy Trojans 26-18
Cincinnati Reds 23-21
Boston Red Caps 24-23
Buffalo Bisons 24-23
Worcester Ruby Legs 14-31
Providence Grays 12-34
Troy had a good week against the top teams in the league and reminded observers that this is more than just a two-team race. However, the immediate schedule appears to favor Chicago. While Cleveland and Troy will be taking on Boston and Buffalo respectively this week, the White Stockings will pay a visit to lowly Providence.
Speaking of the Grays, they appear to have done something smart for the first time in a long while. After having tried veterans Count Sensenderfer (.184) and Dave Eggler (.135) at first base this year, they traded backup pitcher Fred Corey to the Boston Red Caps this week for young first baseman Ed Cogswell. The 26-year-old Cogswell has gotten buried on the Boston depth chart, but he hit .314 as a rookie last season. Could this be a sign of some good things to come for the Grays?
