Matty Hits Dramatic Home Run, Nationals Whip Americans
The touring National League stars continue to reassert their dominance over their American League counterparts in dramatic fashion. Pitcher Christy Mathewson, now with 3 convincing wins on the tour so far, did not have his best stuff but limited the Americans to two runs. The Americans cannot seem to buy runs these days despite getting on base with 10 hits, 4 walks and 3 errors behind the star hurler Mathewson. Mathewson aided his own effort by showing the Americans how it’s done with the bat, hitting a high fly ball that Delahanty couldn't reach and cleared the fence with a 3-run homerun to put the All-Nationals up 5 runs to 2. Christy hadn’t caught his breath yet in the bottom of the frame, allowing 2 walks but enticed White Sox manager Fielder Jones to fly meekly to right to end the game. The win is the All-Nationals seventh in eleven tries versus the All-Americans. The only star for the Americans whose luster is still shining is Cy Young who also has 3 wins. Athletic Eddie Plank and the Browns’ Red Donahue have struggled against the senior circuit. Right fielder Buck Freeman is hitting nearly .400 while star Nap Lajoie is struggling at .234. For the Nationals, the aforementioned Mathewson has picked up three complete game wins and Doc White, scheduled for the box tomorrow, has one shutout. The infield has struggled both on defense and at the bat, whereas the outfielders Donlin, Sheckard and Beaumont have been in the middle of most scoring threats and each are hitting at or near .400 for the series. The teams play a morning game tomorrow before heading back west on their way to Denver for a 5-game set.
