dola,
Defensive subbing works, as does simply benching the guy if you've clinched and are near playoff time. I will also sometimes sit a guy if I'm playing a game that does not appear to be important (e.g. I'm a great first place team playing a last place team and I'm 10 games up on the 2nd place team in August).
I'll bench injury-prone players for stretches when I don't need them as much. The way I view it, it allows me to choose when they will miss time rather than have them miss time when I'd really like to have them around. And if I'm benching a guy, I can always bring him into the game if things get dire. Not so with an injured guy.
