FOYTACK NO-HITS REDS!

Story by Leon Fletcher

St. Louis Cardinals starter Paul Foytack recorded just the second no-hitter of the 1959 Major League Baseball season this afternoon, the 28 year-old keeping the Cincinnati Reds batters silent in a 6-1 victory at Busch Stadium. Foytack walked four and struck out five on 115 pitches, improving his record to 11-8 and dropping his ERA to 3.42. The Reds were only able to score after a two-out fielding error by 3rd baseman Jim Davenport in the 5th allowed Jerry Lynch to cross home plate. Foytack retired the first ten batters he faced before walking Ed Bailey in the 4th. From striking out George Crowe to end the 5th through to the end of the game he was perfect, just a single batter reaching and that was on a catcher's interference call in the 8th.

While Foytack kept Cincinnati under wraps his teammates didn't consolidate until the 8th inning, a four-hit four-run outburst breaking open what had been a tight, tense affair. Davenport made up for his 5th inning error with an RBI single before Gus Triandos cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple soon after. The near capacity crowd of 33,956 gave Foytack a standing ovation as he left the field at the game's conclusion, his fantastic showing a bright light in what has been a frustrating season for the Cardinals. After an impressive April they have slowly but surely drifted out of the pennant race and although today's win was their third straight they're only 50-51 and eleven games behind their league-leading rivals the Chicago Cubs...
