The placement of "only" determines which part of the sentence it qualifies. Observe, please:
"there can only be one top performance" implies that nothing else can "be" true. Might not another circumstance "be" equally as true?
"there can be only one top performance" says clearly that there is one possibility; that is, only "one top performance."
