I also approach logos from my print background, which means I treat them as if they were really going to be printed up onto tickets, programs, brochures, and the like. The more colours you use in a document, the more expensive it is to print.
Also, if you look at most real-world team logos, there are two or three colours used, plus black and/or white, so I tend to follow that methodology.
I found an old web site that helps with picking good complementary colours... I'm probably going to redo the colours in the logo using what it suggests, and also try to think more in terms of on-screen appearance rather than from a print/publishing perspective.
