With the Chicago Cubs in first place at the beginning of August something happened, they started to falter. Their lead slowly diminished down to a single game until near the end of the month and they were back up by 6 games over the Boston Braves when Labor Day rolled around. Babe Herman knocked in 74 runs to lead the charge. Earl Averill and Red Kress each chipped in by driving in 73 runs each. Larry Benton, who was acquired at the trade deadline, won 7 games to help the rotation that included Brandt, Mungo, Gray and Lucas. Red Lucas won 26 games to lead the majors in wins as he won the NL's Outstanding Pitcher Award.
Boston used the batting of Charlie Gehringer, Freddie Lindstrom, Don Hurst and Gene Moore to take second place, 7 games behind the Cubbies. The Giants slipped a notch down to third place on the bat of Mel Ott's 28 home runs and 97 RBIs, both second only to Babe Ruth in those categories. Brooklyn could only manage fourth place despite the hitting of the NL's MVP, Babe Ruth, who batted .317 to go along with his 37 homers and 106 RBIs.
In the American League, Washington continued their dominating ways as they won 95 games, good enough for a 12-game bulge between them and the Cleveland Indians. The hitting of Del Harris and Lou Gehrig led the way for the league's best offense. The Indians, along with the St.Louis Browns, finished with an 83-71 record, tied for second place. Chick Hafey led the Indians' attack with a .317 batting average and a team-leading 88 RBIs.
The World Series ended up being a rematch between the Senators and the defending champion Cubs. After splitting the first two games, Chicago took the next 2 of 3 games in Washington before heading back to the Windy City and taking game six, 1-0, to become the first NL team to win back-to-back World Series.
