Regional Championships - Game 2
Royal Canadians 4, Mexico City 3
It can't be said that Bob Maitland doesn't like drama. Cruising through 8 innings, the right-hander out of Nova Scotia who delivered 14 victories in the regular season for the Mounted Baseballists almost gave up the ghost in the 9th. He allowed a couple singles and a double to bring the game from 4-1 to 4-3 with the tying run on at first base with no outs. Fortunately, his defense behind him then got the job done, turning a sharp ground ball by Aztecs catcher Ramon Guzman into a 6-4-3 double play and then forcing out pinch-hitter Jose Rodriguez to end the game.
Canada ended their playoff scoreless streak early, acquiring 2 runs in the first off of a single, a double, a triple, and an error against Jose Gonzales, who won 25 games in the regular season for the Aztecs. Gonzales, incidentally, got the loss for the Aztecs.
London 4, Berlin 3
Freddie Turvill went the distance for the Monarchs, putting his team up 2 games to none and placing the Teutonic Knights into a must-win situation in their home town 2 days from now. The Monarchs overcame a 2-error 8th inning that saw the score close from 4-1 to 4-3. Errors have bedeviled this team all season long. In better news, 18 year old whiz kid 2B Max Lesage had 3 hits in as many at-bats.
