May 15, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Cleveland Blues 8-2
Boston Red Caps 6-3
Detroit Wolverines 6-3
Troy Trojans 5-3
Worcester Ruby Legs 4-5
Providence Grays 3-6
Buffalo Bisons 3-7
Chicago White Stockings 2-8
Cleveland and Boston at the top of the standings are no surprise, but the Detroit Wolverines are. Thus far, it's been the stellar pitching of Tommy Bond combined with some timely hitting by King Kelly and Orator Shaffer that's kept Detroit competitive. They've beaten Buffalo and Worcester so far, and this week they will do battle with Troy and Providence.
Ross Barnes joined the 1,000 hit club this week, and now sits in second place with 1,002 hits. At 983 hits, Cap Anson will be joining the club soon.
The big injury news for the week is that Troy's Buck Ewing, who was just starting to come into his own, broke his arm and will be out approximately two months.
Finally, Chicago is still reeling from their slow start. They still seem like a fundamentally sound team, but part of the problem is the 0-5 start by sophomore sensation Larry Corcoran. Chicago looks to get better this week at home against Worcester and Boston.
