May 29, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report

Cleveland Blues 12-6
Boston Red Caps 11-6
Troy Trojans 11-6
Detroit Wolverines 10-8
Buffalo Bisons 8-10
Worcester Ruby Legs 7-10
Providence Grays 7-10
Chicago White Stockings 4-14

As we approach the one-quarter mark of 1881, it looks like we've got a real pennant race on our hands. Cleveland and Boston are at the top of the standings, as expected, but Troy and Detroit are surprisingly right there battling for position.

Meanwhile, the best individual performances so far have come from teams that are struggling. Lip Pike of Buffalo and Levi Meyerle of Chicago have been two of the best hitters in the game despite their teams' lackluster records.

Interestingly, Cleveland leads in the standings despite the fact that their hitting has been poor and their pitching hasn't really been anything special. This is because their defense is far and away the best in the National League. For the first time, a team has a very clear advantage in the standings solely based upon their defense.
