The growth of baseball in the 1850's and 1860's as a popular sport evolved into the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players, more commonly known as the National Association. Having seen the success of teams such as the Cincinnati Red Stockings, 9 charter teams join the NA in its inaugural season, rising out of the amateur ranks to form the game's first professional league.
