CLEVELAND'S LEAD NOW FOUR
FOLLOWING WHITE SOX SWEEP

Story by Michael Jones, published in the
6 September 1959 issue of BASEBALL WEEKLY

The Cleveland Blues and Detroit Tigers entered the final month of the 1959 Major League Baseball season tied for the American League lead at 77-53. But with September just five days old the Ohio ballclub now finds itself four games ahead following a seven-game winning streak that started against Detroit back on August 29 and has continued through visits to New York and Chicago. At the same time the Tigers have entered into an alarming slump, ending last week with three consecutive home losses to the Kansas City Athletics to fall to 1-4 for the month.

Cleveland opened September with an 8-2 domination of the fading Yankees to secure a 2-0 series win, Rocky Colavito producing a 3-for-5, 4-RBI afternoon that included his 43rd home run of the season. The Blues then travelled to Chicago where, after being tested in the opening three games they exploded in the fourth, an 11-4 victory in which Colavito homered again but wasn't the big story. That honor went jointly to the first two men in the lineup, Minnie Minoso and Jay Porter. Leftfielder Minoso was 4-for-5, scoring twice and knocking in two while backup catcher Porter went 3-for-4, also crossing home plate twice and recording two RBI. The team collected eighteen hits in the outing, with only Chico Carrasquel missing out amongst the starters.

Meanwhile, the Tigers looked woeful in the three they dropped to the Athletics, the Missouri ballcub outscoring them by a combined total of 17-6. Cy Young favourite Ryne Duren mesmerised Detroit's lineup in Friday's 9-4 defeat, the former Yankee allowing just one hit while walking five and striking out eleven in eight innings of work. The Tigers took to Kansas City reliever Benjamin Johnson in the final frame, collecting five hits and four runs on just 24 pitches from the 22 year-old.

The Blues are now in the driver's seat to claim their 2nd American League pennant in six years although it's not over yet, by any stretch. Both Detroit and Cleveland are inactive today but tomorrow the Blues continue their extended road trip when they visit Kansas City while the Tigers host the White Sox...
