Washington center fielder John Arend’s hitting streak ended at 26 games, but teammate Josh Croyle is challenging at the same time. The Olympics catcher extended his streak to 25 games in September, and it’s the only active streak longer than 15 games.
More than thirty whaling ships, chasing bowhead whales off the coast of Alaska, were abandoned by mid-September as pack ice closed in behind them. Seven ships that had escaped the ice before it closed in were able to rescue the stranded crews after dumping their cargos.
