Notes -

Brussels got off to a quick start after the break. They scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th to beat Madrid 8-7 on June 29th. They had a 15-3 run in July to pull away in their division.
Berlin won 9 games in a row in July to take control of the Wildcard race. The worst got worse as Budapest had a 3-14 streak and London won only 1 of their first 15 games in July.
Milan scored 10 in an inning to beat Glasgow 14-4, then just over a month later against the same team scored an EBL record 15 in an inning in a 21-7 win. In the big inning, Max Sabin was 2/2 with a walk.
Amazingly Vienna were involved in their second 22 inning game of the season as they lost 5-4 to London on September 8th.
No real tight races for playoff spots. Amsterdam had a chance to pass Brussels, but lost 2 of 3 at home to the Hitmen in the penultimate series of the season. These losses also erased any chance they had at a Wildcard spot.

Player Notes -

June's Players of the Month were -

WL Hitter: Sander Klaeboe (Zurich) - .349/6/25
EL Hitter: Holly Connich (Warsaw) - .414/4/19
WL Pitcher: Pierangelo Magherini (Zurich) - 5-0/3.09
EL Pitcher: Alexis Martin (Copenhagen) - 4-0/1.72

Brussels acquired some pitching help in deadline day trades. They added SP Hampus Assar from Madrid and RP Vasilii Lelyuk from Prague. They did have to give up CF Fabio Quinhones to get Lelyuk.
Mojslaw Szasz (Helsinki) set a new EBL record for consecutive save opportunites converted. Covering 1985 and 1986 he saved 64 opportunities in a row, with the streak finally ending in the last few weeks of the season.
Dublin's Erik Paulsen threw a 2-hitter against Milan on July 30th. There were three other 2-hitters over the rest of the season and one no-hitter. The two hitters were thrown by Alois Maloney (Amsterdam), Alexis Martin (Copenhagen) and Athens rookie Axel Rosengren. The no-hitter went to Martin's team-mate Jens Fetterlein.
Rookie Samuel Polach (Hamburg) was the EL's Hitter of the Month for both July and August. He hit 20 home runs in the two month stretch.
Three pitchers threw complete game shutouts on August 10th - Janos Racz (Hamburg), Sindre Grondalen (Madrid) and Jakob Kjeldsen (Barcelona).
The Pitchers of the Month for July were Paris rookie Ralph Neubert (WL) and Athens reliever Thanos Karoki (EL). Neubert's month formed part of a 20 game unbeaten streak that lasted until his final start of the season. He finished 1986 with a 12-3 record and a 3.02 ERA.
Philippe Martin (Milan) was the WL's Hitter of the Month for July and he finished the season as the first ever man to take the Triple Crown in the EBL. His season average was .351 and he hit an EBL record 48 home runs, batting in 156 runs.
1981's European League Series MVP, Lorenzo Gutierrez, won the WL Hitter of the Month award in August by hitting 12 HR in the month.
The Pitchers of the final full month of the season were Alexander Schrimpf (Paris) and Botol Burnay (Helsinki).

Significant Injuries -

The Chinese Polishman, Cheung Ying (Brussels), has a pinched nerve and will miss 12 months. He was at .305 with 18 home runs on July 8th when it happened.
Barcelona's Marcos Gonzales missed the last month of the season with a back injury. He finished at .252 with 24 homers.
Zurich's multiple batting champ, Ony Proskurnya, will miss the playoffs after fracturing an eye socket. He hit .318 on the year.
