Red Sox sign two southpaws
Willis, Ledezma coming to Boston
Wednesday, January 23, 2014

BOSTON - Having decided not to make offers to Danny Haren and Kameron Loe, the Red Sox replaced the two veterans with a pair of left-handers in Dontrelle Willis and Wilfredo Ledezma.
Willis, 32, is guaranteed $8.66 million in the upcoming 2014 season and the Red Sox hold a $9 million option for the 2015 season. Willis had been seeking a three-year contract but settled for one guaranteed season with the possibility of a second as he comes back from a ruptured bicep tendon that cut his season short in June. He will not be available for spring training and is expected to miss the first 6-8 weeks of the regular season.
"We're not sure when Dontrelle will be joining the rotation," Red Sox manager Kevin Kennedy said. "I suppose where we are, what we're doing, who is doing what, as well as, obviously, how he is feeling and how he's throwing the ball, will dictate how much time he spends rehabbing and is down in Portland or Pawtucket working his way back."
Willis went 7-2 with a 3.73 ERA in 15 starts with the Atlanta Braves last season before going down with the injury. He owns a career record of 181-101 with a 3.33 ERA in 375 starts with the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and Atlanta over 12 seasons.
"I'm excited to come to a new team, a new league and get back to pitching at a top level," said Willis, a six-time All Star.
The Red Sox lose a first round draft pick to the Braves as compensation for the Willis signing.
Ledezma, 33, will also join Boston after spending his entire 11-year-career in the National League with the San Diego Padres and San Francisco. He went 9-7 with a 4.29 ERA with the Padres last season and owns a 68-63 record and 4.25 ERA over his career. Ledezma will earn $3.25 million next year.
