1872-1873 Offseason
The National Association continues to see a great deal of turnover in the teams in the league. Returning after the 1872 season are Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Batlimore, and the Atlantics. Four teams join the league in 1873 to bring the total back up to 9. The new teams are the Baltimore Marylands, Philadelphia White Stockings, Elizabeth Resolutes, and Washington Blue Legs.

Nov 5: Ulysses S. Grant wins the presidential election over Horace Greeley. Also, Susan B. Anthony votes for the first time. She is arrested and fined.
Dec 4: The American ship Mary Celeste is found drifting crewless by a British vessel, with no evidence of foul play any apparent reason for the crew to be missing.
Mar 3: The NA adopts a standardized ball to be used in all games.
Mar 15: Phi Simga Kappa is founded at the University of Massachusetts.
