With Philadelphia and Boston off on their tour of England, there weren’t a lot of games scheduled in August. Most teams played only a handful of games, and Chicago was able to gain a half game on the absent Athletics. Most teams made only modest gains or minor losses in the standings with the lone exception of the White Stockings of Philadelphia. They went 5-2 in August to move into a virtual tie with Boston for 5th place, and a little more respectability.
