The Red Stockings and Athletics returned to the NA on September 10th and immediately began heading in opposite directions from when they left. Boston won both of the meetings between the two teams, then went on to go 8-5 for the month and move up to 4th in the standings. The Athletics dropped several games against Chicago, going 3-7 on the month and falling all the way to 5 games back. Chicago took advantage, moving to 3.5 games ahead of the Atlantics in sole possession of first place. The other White Stockings lost all 6 of their games in September.
