August 7, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Boston Red Caps 33-20
Cleveland Blues 32-21
Detroit Wolverines 30-24
Troy Trojans 29-25
Chicago White Stockings 25-29
Buffalo Bisons 23-29
Providence Grays 23-31
Worcester Ruby Legs 18-34
A terrible week for Cleveland threw the National League race wide open. The Blues were swept by the Detroit Wolverines, allowing Boston to take a one-game lead, and the Wolverines are now only three games out of first. Cleveland needs to find some offense, as they have exceeded three runs scored only once in the past seven games. (They are 2-5 in that span.) This week, they get to try to rediscover their hitting against Buffalo.
Meanwhile, Boston, after taking two of three from last-place Worcester, takes on the Providence Grays for four games this week. If Cleveland has trouble with Buffalo, this could be a chance for Boston to open up a lead.
