August 21, 1881 - Sunday Base Ball Report

Troy Trojans 33-28
Chicago White Stockings 27-34
Buffalo Bisons 26-33
Providence Grays 24-37
Worcester Ruby Legs 23-35

This was a terrible week for Boston. Not only did they drop three of four games to fall into a tie for the league lead, they also had star second baseman Ross Barnes injure his knee. Early reports suggest that Barnes will be out for at least a month, and possibly for the remainder of the 1881 season. Although the injury is not considered career-threatening, Barnes looked probable to win his third MVH Award, and seemed to be leading Boston to its third consecutive pennant. Now it will be up to Cap Anson, Cal McVey, and Mike Dorgan to pick up the slack.

Meanwhile, Paul Hines of Chicago continues his assault on the record books with an amazing seventh home run in a single season. Prior to this year, Hines had hit five home runs in nine big league seasons; now the record books are being rewritten by this sudden slugger.
