Notes -
On June 27th Athens and Berlin went into the 9th tied at 6. The Avalanche scored 3 in the top half of the inning, but Berlin responded with 4 to take the win.
Barcelona beat Brussels 2-1 in the longest game of the season, a 21 inning game on June 29th. Brussels also played a game when they scored 10 in an inning, but still lost 14-13 to Zurich.
Paris scored 5 in the bottom of the 9th to beat Barcelona 7-6 on July 11th.
Copenhagen won 9 in a row in July to leap into 1st in the Baltic division and they held on the rest of the way.
Athens scored 5 in the 8th, 2 in the 9th and 2 in the 10th to beat Oslo 10-8 on August 30th.
Dublin scored 6 runs in the top of the 1st, but Madrid responded with 9 in their half of the first frame on their way to a 13-12 win.
Prague and Dublin both won on the last day to secure their division titles.
Player Notes -
Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin) lost his first game of the season on August 28th. His unbeaten streak stretched over the second half of 1988 and accounted for 31 starts, an EBL record.
Ibrahim Grandjean (Dublin) and
Roque Vilardeb (Lisbon) both had a one-hitter in the second half.
Again there were 12 award winners in the second half. The hitters were
Stefan Kowelski (Glasgow),
Philippe Martin (Milan),
Jason Dyer (Amsterdam),
Gottfried Helfkin (Stockholm),
Eduardo Aguilar (Budapest) and
Samuel Polach (Hamburg). The pitchers were
Tahvo Ahonen (Madrid),
Malcolm Kennedy (Paris),
Juliao Virgolino (Barcelona),
Tobias Handeland (Athens),
Michel Theiry (Oslo) and
Guy Brady (Copenhagen).
Lisbon's
Danny Day hit a walk-off 3 run homer in a 6-5 win over Paris on July 15th.
Vilfred Krak (Warsaw) hit 3 home runs against Sofia on July 23rd.
Stefan Kowelski (Glasgow) repeated the feat in a loss to Paris on July 31st.
Vienna C
Mark MacClacher had a 6/6 day on August 13th.
Francois Cotte (Barcelona) had 7 RBI as his team beat Paris 14-3 on August 15th. Berlin's
Dzevat Adzovic also had a 7 RBI day on August 19th.
Adzovic's was more remarkable because his team only scored 7 runs as they beat Sofia.
Samuel Polach (Hamburg) hit his first ever cycle on August 28th.
Philippe Martin (Milan) had a 7 RBI day in September, but the best hitting performance of the second half was by
Tomislaw Eudzerski (Dublin) who was 6/7, including hitting for the cycle, with 6 RBI and 4 runs scored in a 22-1 win over Milan on September 10th.
Nicodemus Theothanou (Brussels) had a 30 game hit streak late in the season.
Significant Injuries -
Bernard Wulker (Prague) missed 4 weeks with a back injury. He then injured himself later in the season and will miss the playoffs. He finished at .352 with 18 homers and 74 RBI. The Eliminators will also be without rookie
Sergio Lousa, who hit .299 with 9 HR and 41 RBI in his first full season.
Lousa's injury will also probably keep him out of all of the 1990 season.
Dublin's
Raul Marroquin was injured on July 29th and missed the remainder of the season. He had 26 homers before his shoulder gave way.
