Really, the main thing that I've found as far as prospects, is that you need to take manual control.

The reason is this:

1) A lot of times `top prospects' will turn out to be duds, or not develop to their indicated rating potential. In that case, why would you want them? You have to have the instinct to determine this.

2) You scope out a player, maybe he's already on your team in the minors, maybe you're in the trading screen scoping out minor leaguers on other teams. 2 or 3 stars is all you need, players can perform beyond their potential, just like they can perform below their potential.

You look at the star ratings of the player, and you have to have a combination of a hunch and an educated guess based on his star ratings of current ability and potential.

Then, you promote him/acquire him to your 40 man roster/active lineup. At first he might be playing poorly, he needs time to get acclimated to his new team and surroundings. He might even be upset for awhile that the old team traded him away.

Then, he starts getting hits. Starts getting RBI's, and turns into one of your top players, or maybe a strong, reliable bench or alternate player, while your main guy is resting for a few days.

This, for me, is the true and ultimate beauty of OOTP.

It's really an RPG in disguise.

You can let the AI sim the games, even set your lineups, but you need to be in charge of who is on the team. I also strongly recommend manually setting your strategy settings for both team and individual players. You have to customize your strategy to the kind of players that are on your team. ie; speed, stealing, power, contact, etc.

Unless you're playing a hardcore manager mode and starting at the bottom with a rookie league where you have no control.

Don't forget to frequently check each players primary position compared to what the AI has him currently playing. You don't want to be wasting a 16 rated shortstop at 1st base, where he might be rated a 9. That will definitely cost you some runs.

The AI isn't bad, but it's always going to be different from the way you want things done.
