Notes -
London's investment in the free-agency market has paid off to the tune of a lead in their division. They have been helped by last year's WL champions, Dublin, losing a fair portion of their big name players and having to rebuild and a slightly down season (so far) by Glasgow.
Helsinki won 21 games in May and it would be a big surprise if anyone outside of them, Berlin, Copenhagen and Sofia forced their way into the playoffs.
There was a new record set for the longest EBL game in history. Zurich beat Vienna 8-7 in 24 innings. After going hitless in his first 10 at bats,
Ricardo Wening finished the game with a home run at 2:04am local time.
Player Notes -
Artemis Vlakhou (Berlin) made a good early impression for his new team, hitting 4 home runs and having 9 RBIs in his first 5 games as a Dragon.
The best pitching performance so far of 1993 came early on when
Adrien Pierre (Paris) threw a one-hitter against Milan.
Two exciting young players would appear to be favourites for the WL Hitter of the Year award. Barcelona's
Stefan Fingerlos and
Nicodemus Theothanou of Brussels have both won a monthly award so far this season and have pretty impressive stat lines.
Theothanou is having a particularly good year, hitting .358 with 24 home runs and 58 RBIs so far.
The EL Hitter of the month awards went to two veterans from the Copenhagen Armada.
Thomas Meinert won in April and
Rudolf Tuhina won in May.
Some unknown names have won the Pitcher of the Month award this season.
Raynaud Mori (Lisbon) is reasonably well known, but rookie
Cosmo Popotas (Paris) is obviously a new name and
Karcsi Csontas (Stockholm) and
Francis Heeffer (Helsinki) are not exactly famous either.
There was a battle to see who would become the first man to 200 EBL wins, which was eventually won by
Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin). When he got to 200,
Malcolm Kennedy (Dublin) was on 199 and he himself passed the landmark just over a week later.
There were also three more players who passed the 2000 hit milestone -
Ony Prosurnya (Moscow),
Francis Gautier (Copenhagen) and
Giacomo Grappasonni (Barcelona).
Grapassonni is having the season of his life at 37, hitting .358 with 10 homers thus far.
Significant Injuries -
Athens CF
Arsen Pentzopoulos was injured in the first month of the season and will be out all year.
Jason Dyer (Amsterdam) missed 6 weeks from the end of April.
Helmuth Seipel (Budapest) saw his first season with a new team cut short thanks to a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament. His 4-8 record with a 5.12 ERA wasn't really paying off the investment anyway.
